Conductor: Roderick Dunk | Soloist: Fenella Humphreys - Violin
WAGNER Rienzi Overture
SIBELIUS Violin Concerto in D minor, Op. 47
TCHAIKOVSKY Symphony No. 4 in F minor, Op. 36
Wagner's opera Rienzi is an early work dating from 1840, and its overture, which starts the concert, is an absolute cracker! The listener's attention is caught immediately by a solo trumpet call and what follows is rousing and majestic.
The Violin Concerto by Sibelius rivals that of Tchaikovsky (played in the opening concert of this RTWSO season) in difficulty and is regarded as being one of the most technically demanding to play, requiring a violinist of great ability. Gramophone Magazine has described Fenella Humphreys as having '…a strong tone, easy fluidity and immaculate technique…' We're in for a treat! The concert ends with Tchaikovsky's mighty Symphony No. 4. Opening with what has become known ominously as the 'Fate' motif and ending in a blaze of glory, this symphony is full of lush strings, booming brass and wonderfully romantic melodies.
