A unique insight by the renowned feminist lawyer Harriet Wistrich into ten of her hard-won cases, demonstrating that terrifyingly often, the law is not fit-for-purpose for half the population. Harriet will be interviewed by Laura Bates.
In a remarkable legal career, Harriet has been at the forefront of some historic and ground-
breaking legal victories. Frequently working with women who have survived male violence or abuse, sometimes with the bereaved families of those who did not survive, her work has led
her to challenge the police, CPS, government departments and the prison and immigration detention system.
In Sister in Law, she tells the shocking stories of some of those who have come to her for
assistance and shines a feminist light on the landscape of arcane laws and byzantine systems, skewed towards male behaviour and responses, through which she has steered them.
Laura Bates is a feminist activist, New York Times and Sunday Times best-selling author, and founder of the Everyday Sexism Project.
She works closely with government, schools, businesses, police forces and bodies from the United Nations to the Council of Europe on sexism and inequality. Her activism has helped to put consent on the national curriculum, seen extreme misogyny categorised as a form of terrorism by the UK government, changed Facebook's policies on sexual violence content, and helped to transform the British Transport Police's response to sexual harassment and assault.
Laura has been awarded a British Empire Medal, a British Press Award, and several honorary degrees. She's an Honorary Fellow of St John's College, Cambridge, and Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature.
